During WW2 two German Focke Wulf 190 aeroplanes attacked Salisbury city centre. Approaching the city, they split into two directions where one of them flew over the top of the market square and went into Castle Street, flying between the buildings. Half way along the street, he started to open fire with his machine gun, shooting as he flew, causing everyone to run for cover. He proceeded past the bridge at the end to machine gun the gas containers at Gas Lane whilst dropping a bomb along the way. He caused little damage and no loss of life but was decorated for this action back home. Here is a short excerpt from one of our witnesses who was there on the day with her little brothers!
